Great article.

We've seen the impact of social marketing for B2B first-hand. Our marketing firm launched a campaign for b2bfiles.net, a File Transfer & File Sharing company specifically built for the business community, and were very pleased at the response of the general public, who, themselves, need a service like b2bfiles.net at the office.

Very interested cycle.

Katie

I totally agree but still find it hard to convince our clients (all B2B) that social media is not an option but a necessity. We usually do a competitive benchmark for our clients to show them what their competitors are doing..I will send them these figures as argument for using SM in 2010.

Thanks for the post and the interesting stats. I agree that social media is a must for B2B companies - for both external use and internal use. The reasons B2B companies use social media today remind me a lot of the "Internet Presence Strategy" workshops I used to run around 1997 - when companies were not sure how to best utilize the Internet to add value to their businesses. One of the sticky points is the question of how to integrate this into the day-to-day processes and operational systems of a company. This should be aligned with the value objectives and milestones set when adopting social media, and is a key component of convincing company management to use it beyond a specific one-time campaign.

I think it's a good self-fulfilling loop.

When you use social media, you're connecting with customers. when you connect with customers, you find out needs. When you find out needs, you're relevant. To be relevant and useful, you have to be authentic. When you're authentic and relevant and useful, then your "thing" gets spread through word of mouth marketing. The more raving fans you get, the more you can hone what you do and be your authentic self or service or company ... and your raving fans help keep you authentic and honest. And the cycle goes on.
