Facebook Chat
So this morning I get on Facebook and guess what I find? Facebook Chat. Yes it was expected, but it was also a nice suprise.
Since I have I almost 900 friends on Facebook, you can imagine the number of IM’s I’ve been receiving. I find myself spending even MORE hours on Facebook today (if that’s even possible).
This feature will definitely add to the stickiness of the site and also make Facebook a more cohesive community I believe. With chat, its much easier to keep in touch with a larger number of contacts than through private messaging.
The feature is also advantageous for marketers who are looking for constant interaction with individuals in their communities. However marketers should be cautious not to turn chat into yet another spamming tool (like what happened with Super Wall) because this will definitely cause everyone to list themselves as “unavailable”.
I would also advise you to be careful of approaching bloggers in this manner. IM can be quite intrusive to one’s privacy and approaching bloggers through chat, is not a good idea. These approaches should be made by private messaging.
It’s a known fact that many of us already use FaceBook as our main email platform (even though there are many improvements to be made here as well). Now that we have Facebook Chat, seems like Gmail with its chat is becoming even more dispensible.
Anyways, I’d be happy to hear what you guys think about Facebook chat. Love it? Hate it?

This service as some already call it “Facenger” is totally fresh and absolutely not mature yet, so we should evaluate and judge it accordingly.
It lacks many features that probably would be added later on, so finally when it would be equivalent and comparable to ICQ/MSN/Yahoo services it would have an interesting impact on our daily habits.
On top, its a non-installable chat client which is an advantage, and i believe that its next version is going to give MSN/Yahoo hard times. It is a wake up call for them already.
So it’s not the best chat service out there, but it’s convenience is amazing. This is bad new for worker productivity all over!
This service desperately needs to live beyond the browser window to really make an impact. Once we can see all our Facebook friends in Adium or whatever chat client we’re using, alongside our g-talk or msn contacts, then we’ll have something worth talking (chatting?) about.
Another smart addition would be chat-room type functionality, so that, as with twitter and irc, all of your online contacts can follow and contribute to a particular conversation.
At the end of the day, the chat dynamic is a necessary module to close the more immediate communication gap that is so obvious with the limited functionality of the traditional wall post.
If we could choose to save and archive our chats on some kind of wall, and have them displayed as iPhone style sms threads, that would go a long way towards solving the broken telephone style exchange that the one post no my wall, reply on your wall dynamic creates.
Some great ideas Luke.
Amy, I agree. So it’s not the best service out there, but for now, it serves its purpose. I am sure FB will make the appropriate additions in the future.
I think the chat was as you mentioned a necessity. I wonder when they will add voice… I actually wanted to draw your attention to something I heard about Facebook which was nto so cool: http://cafe.themarker.com/view.php?t=398282 I’d like to hear your opinion about that. Thanks!
Hey Ayelet,
Sorry for posting a comment to an old post, but I’m reading your blog for the first time today – Great blog by the way!
As to this post, I only have one question – How did you get your FB friends count to 900??? Do you actually know all of these people?
Keep on the great work – I’m subscribing to your RSS…
-Jenia.
Hey Jenia:
In answer to your question, first of all, I’ve been on Facebook for quite some time now. Second, many of my readers are my facebook friends and as my readers, I consider you all my friends. Third, believe it or not, I know many of the 900 people on the list and have met them offline. I have made many valuable connections on Facebook both professional and social.
Thanks for the kind words re my blog!
